What is the Deep Carbon Observatory?

The Deep Carbon Observatory is an initiative dedicated to achieving a transformational understanding of Earth’s deep carbon cycle, including its poorly constrained reservoirs and fluxes, the unknown role of deep biology, and unexplored influences of the deep carbon cycle on critical societal concerns related to energy, environment and climate.

Qatar Oil and Gas Summary

Qatar is a major exporter of oil and natural gas. Those commodities account for over half of the country’s GDP. Qatar ranks third worldwide in natural gas reserves and is the world’s leading exporter of liquefied natural gas. More at the Energy Information Administraion website.

Israel’s Leviathan Natural Gas Field

A massive natural gas find in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Israel is believed to hold about 450 billion cubic meters of gas. The Leviathan Gas Field is being called “the most important energy news since the country was founded.” More at Voice of America.

Azerbaijan Natural Gas Production is Rising Rapidly

Natural gas production in Azerbaijan is rising rapidly and the country has become a net exporter. At present most of their production is from offshore fields. None is from shale. More at the EIA Country Analysis Brief.

Energy Quality Causes Recessions?

“An overlooked cause of the economic recession in the United States is a decade long decline in the quality of the nation’s energy supply, often measured as the amount of energy we get out for a given energy input, says energy expert Carey King of The University of Texas at Austin.” Quoted from the University of Texas at Austin press release.

Note: Although the “energy quality” concept is interesting, the long-term trends for coal and natural gas really got our attention.

Chevron Hits More Gas in the Carnarvon Basin (Australia)

Chevron continues to find more natural gas off the northwest coast of Australia with two wells in the Carnarvon Basin. These fields are close to their Gogron LNG terminal. (See press releases from August 12 and 16.)

Australia: Chevron’s Clio Deepwater Natural Gas Discovery

Chevron’s Clio-3 discovery well found 260 feet of net gas pay, making it the third consecutive deepwater discovery in the Carnarvon Basin offshore of Western Australia. These new wells are near Chevron’s Gorgon Project, the largest single resource natural gas project in Australia’s history. Full details at the Chevron press release.
