A post on the Seeking Alpha blog details how successful Chesapeake Energy has been at rapidly leasing enormous acreages in all of the major natural gas shale plays in the United States. They author calls them a “land acquisition machine”.

EnCana Acquires 250,000 Collingwood Shale Acres

EnCana reports that they purchased 250,000 net acres above the Collingwood Shale in Michigan. More on the Bloomberg.com website.

Collingwood-Utica Gas Play – Michigan

Encana Corporation reports that they acquired a quarter million acres in Cheboygan, Kalkaska, and Missaukee Counties, Michigan for about $150/acre. They are reporting production from the Collingwood Shale (2.5 million cubic feet per day from one well), the rock unit immediately below the Utica and immediately above the Trenton.
